I have a '89 4wd Suburban and I just bought a SB400 block and I got the crank and pistons to make it a 406 but I think I wann keep it a 400. This is my first 4wd project and I'm not sure how to build it up; motor, tranny, transfer case, etc... The factory motor is 350, tranny is R700, and the transfer case is NP205. Any help would be much appreciated.

First off you have a 208 not a 205 2nd the 700 never last long behind any power or offroading 3rd did you buy this 400 used and is this the parts that come with the motor the pistons are the last thing you need to buy and are you going to keep the EFI

The 700 will work fine behind the 400 if you build it right. Call Joe Rachal Transmission in Shreveport 318-226-9005 and ask for Mike Smith hes the owner.
He built one for a buddie of mine with a 400sbc making 535hp and 650 ftlbs of TQ.  Has lived for 4yrs on the street and strip.
Just make sure to get the TV cable level or you will toast it in no time. Hes doing the c6 for Dozer now.

Yes the block was a used block and it has been checked for stress cracks. When I bought it the guy gave me the pistons and crank to make it a 406, as far as the transfer case goes I got the window sticker for it and the 208 was changed at the dealership to the 205, it was some kind of offroad package deal they was doing I guess. I'm still debating weither to for EFI or carb, the transmission I've been told will be ok since I'm not going to be doing any heavy mudding I'm trying to build it as a daily driver/weekend mudder, I do have a turbo 350 layin in my garage that I've thought about putting into it. I've never built a 4wd so alot of things I'm not sure of,  the gentle man I bought my Suburban from did tell me when he had it he changed the front hubs to Warren manual locking hubs and the gear ratio was change to 4.10's or 4.11's not sure. I do know I wanna do a suspension lift but not sure what to go with, I atleast want to be able to put a set of 40's under it if I want, right now I have 33's.
